Following a jam packed year including a sell-out tour and an assault on the US, JLS could have been forgiven for taking a break but instead, JB, Aston, Marvin and Oritse sat down with MTV News to talk about everything from Cowell to condoms…
You guys have just got back off tour, how did it go?
JB: We’ve just finished a 40-date tour around the UK and Ireland and it was incredible. I think everyone had a fantastic vibe. Obviously it is a day-to-day job because it is what we do day in day out, but we love absolutely every minute of it.
Your new single is Eyes Wide Shut Feat. Tinie Tempah, can you tell us a bit about how that collaboration came about?
Marvin: Tinie killed it on the track; it was a track that we’d written first of all in LA, last summer. We’d tried to work with Tinie for a long time. We were either going to feature on something of his or vice versa you know, he heard the track and he wanted to jump on it. Then we got to shoot a video with him. People don’t think he was actually at the video shoot but he was. It was an amazing video for us, and you know everyone at MTV is enjoying it, it’s on all the channels!
JB: Tinie is the most humble guy. He’s always so respectful and I think that transcends through his songs.
Was it weird shooting the video on a green screen? Was it difficult to imagine the finished product, because you couldn’t really tell how it was going to look afterwards?
Oritse: It was our very first time doing it on green screen. The director sat us down and said it was going to be something like Inception, or The Matrix – something along those lines – and we were like, ‘are you being for real?’ When we saw the video for the very first time we couldn’t believe it, because it was everything and more than what he’d described to us!
So we hear that Aston’s was the best selling of the four condoms in your range…..
JB: To be fair we already knew Aston’s would be the best selling.
Marvin: It’s obvious.
JB: When it comes to merchandise, the blue ones always go first!
Aston: Yeah, I feel honoured to be the best selling condom of 2010. Thank you.
Simon Cowell is about to announce the judges for the US version of The X Factor, with names like Nicole Scherzinger, Katy Perry and our Cheryl Cole in the mix – who do you think will get the role?
Oritse: Any one of them would be amazing!
Aston: Yeah, they’re all good for me.
Marvin: Well there are probably going to be two now if it’s like X Factor UK, there are 4 in total if we believe what we read in the paper. I don’t know how true it is that Will Smith was going to be one but Cheryl would be great.
JB: How great would Simon feel just sitting there with three female judges, he would feel like the man.
Marvin: One thing they should definitely have is Dermot O’Leary as host.
Everyone’s talking about Jessie J, espeically as she was named Critics’ Choice at The BRIT Awards 2011, what do you guys think of her?
Oritse: I think that was a great decision because Jessie came out of nowhere and just tore up the charts. Our country’s never had anything like Jessie, she’s got that kind of pop iconic appeal, in the same way that Madonna had and Lady GaGa has for the rest of the world. I think that for someone like Jessie she’s just the realist artist that you can find. She’s a really nice person, she’s a really good-hearted person and I think it’s well deserved.
